Depression Tips: Challenge Negative Thoughts

If you find yourself in depression, or generally going in the direction of negative thinking, then challenge those thoughts.

Depression is born out of negative thoughts, and it grows with them. If those thoughts are challenged, you may begin to see a change take place.

To start, try to think more positively. Whenever you are encountered with negative thoughts, force your mind to think of something positive. Think of all the things you have in life, for example a loving relationship with others, your precious belongings and the fact that you are still alive.

Keep your chin up, be positive :).

Admit Depression

Depression is a stigma so strong that some people may feel ashamed to even have it. Sometimes, they may go as far as lying to themselves, saying they are completely alright when they really are not. Why lie like that to yourself?

Admit Depression.

When it comes to your life and health, you will know it better than anyone else. Why else do doctors rely on accurate responses from their patients to determine the causes and solutions?

Lying to yourself can not only create misunderstandings when consulting others related to these topics, but also create a sense of disillusionment for you. Know that lying to yourself can have deadly consequences in the future, especially for issues related to your mental health. If you avoid it, it could easily get worse and worse without proper precaution.

Depression for example has different stages, but that doesn’t mean that you will slowly progress through the stages. You could end up jumping from mild to severe depression in a matter of hours or minutes (sometimes even seconds).

When you lie to yourself, you don’t do anyone any favors. You do a disservice to those genuinely concerned for you. Most of all, you do a disservice to yourself, the one individual in the world you should be honest to.

If you are afraid to face depression, look for external help to help give you the courage. If you are ashamed, know that you are not the only one going through these tough periods in life, thousands of other people go through the same thing. In fact, some people have it far worse than you, so take comfort in the fact that you are still alive.

Let’s just honest with ourselves, things would go far more swimmingly if we all did that.

DEPRESSION IS A NECESSITY

Judging from the title, you may be thinking what is this person talking about?

How is it that depression can ever be a necessity?

But, just let go of all the preconceptions you have about it and just read onward, and perhaps you may just find the answer to that “How”.

When we are depressed, we are at our lowest. No matter what we do nothing will ever seem good enough and there will no doubt be a lot of negativity in our minds. But depression is associated with negativity quite a lot, it doesn’t get as much credit as it should for some of the positive effects it can have.

Positive effects like what?

Depression can be that trigger to help re-evaluate your life and perhaps set it on a more fulfilling path. Depression can be the cause of a much needed change to define who you will be, a stronger individual. Depression can be the cause of wiping out the impurities within you.

Just like the economy, our mood has its ups and downs. Depression is the what can help us strip away our ego, pride and self-confidence. It can leave us bare to look at what we really are at the moment and leave us to shape ourselves again into what we may want to be. Think of depression like taking a perfectly shaped cube and turning it into a big blob of clay. That clay is then there to be molded into whatever shape you desire next.

So where does the necessity come into all of this?

With depression, we are able to see our impurities, our own negative traits. When we are at our most bare, we have the opportunity and with the correct motivation, the ability to rid ourselves of such impurities. We can allow the seeds of change to grow from there onward then. When we rid ourselves of those impurities, we can reorder ourselves at a higher level than we were at before. This level is what is in essence called change. The necessity is there in order to help us change.

How would we rid ourselves of the impurities?

That is a question better answered based on your own situation. The impurities you find may differ from someone else’s situation due to many different factors taking place. However, the concept remains the same. Depression will always remain as long as emotions remain in us. But at the end of the day, what matters most is how you handle it and that you make the best of the cards you are dealt.

Shackles Sometimes Are Nothing More Than an Illusion

There are some things that we can’t do in life, but some things we can. It all depends on how you look at things and your circumstances. But there are times where we drive ourselves into thinking we can’t do something. Those shackles sometimes are nothing more than an illusion.

Shackles are created out of fear, whether it be fear of failure or something else. But those shackles can paralyze us from moving forward. Heard the saying that fear is nothing more than an illusion? Same can be applied here though within certain contexts. Sometimes we have a good reason for the self imposed shackles.

Though this shouldn’t keep us from breaking the ones that are simply untrue and unnecessary. Shackles, as their purpose is to restrict, hamper the ones they are imposed on. As said before, sometimes they have their reasons for being there, at other times they are simply unneeded.

To move on, we have to learn to let go of such illusions and fears. To move on, we have to learn to look beyond the things that tie us down. Some shackles are nothing more than an illusion, and it should be thought of as such if we wish to move forward in life.

Got Depression? Think of Going Carefree

What is a carefree person like?

Based on the definition of carefree, they are free of worries and to some extent, responsibilities.

Normally when we have depression, there is a sense of over thinking that goes on in our heads. We may be stuck in a loop of our thought process, unable to move on. Such over thinking could also cause worries for us. Not to mention, when depressed we sometimes feel guilty for “neglecting” our responsibilities.

Maybe, it is time you go carefree for once. Accept your situation, work with what you are given and simply live day to day appreciating what happens in there. Thinking too much about your responsibilities, or any negative self-talk can be very detrimental. Get out of your own head, go for walks, and perhaps put some of your not so important responsibilities on a back burner.

Some people say that being too carefree is a bad thing. But you know what, sometimes this is just the thing you need in order to adapt and help overcome your depression.

Blindly Believing is NOT So Bad

People tell others to always plan ahead, to only do things that they can handle. But sometimes, we want to do things bigger than anything we have ever done before. We want to take on a task so massive, that it may shake us with uncertainty. Of course if people were to see that, they may tell you to just give up and focus on what you can do right now. From a productive standpoint, they maybe right.

BUT, what about you?

How would you feel if you just followed that advice?

Do you think that you may have some regrets if you just gave up on a particular goal just because it seemed overwhelming or too big to complete?

Heard the term, “blind faith”? Sometimes, we just have to blindly believe in something to see us through. Even if you fail, at least you can say that you tried. 5, 10 or even 20 years down the line, you may look back on it with satisfaction regardless of your level of success. Because you can get back up from failure, but if you never tried something even if you wanted to, nothing can so easily fix regrets.

So why not go out and make the best of what you have, and do the things you want to. Failure is a part of life that is a learning experience, regret however is a scar that is much difficult to heal from.

Are You Feeling the Blues or Actually Depressed?

Have there ever been days in which you wonder whether you are feeling the blues or are actually depressed?

If so, here is a handy checklist to determine whether you are experiencing depression or not:

  • Do you experience constant fatigue and loss of energy?
  • Are you experiencing sadness, or feel “empty” inside?
  • Have you instantly lost interest in the things that once provided great pleasure to you?
  • Are you experiencing any significant weight loss or gain without doing anything?
  • Do you ever have feelings of worthlessness?
  • Has making decisions become harder for you than usual?
  • Are you experiencing difficulty in falling asleep, or waking up and getting out of bed?
  • Do thoughts of suicide tend to cross your mind often?
  • Have you experienced the above mentioned symptoms for more than a week now?

If your answer was yes to most or all of them, especially the last question, then you may very well be experiencing depression. It is best that you go to a doctor then for a professional medical opinion.

If you only felt those symptoms for less than a week, it may just be the blues.

The difference between the two is that with the blue, you will feel sad for a short time. With depression, it can last for a long time, and if not handled with care, it can last over a year. In some cases, depression can persists for several years before it is completely gone.
